To whom you tell your secret you surrender your freedom. Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live. It is asking others to live as one wishes to live. History suggests that capitalism is a necessary condition for political freedom. Doing what you like is freedom. Liking what you do is happiness. Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed. What a curious phenomenon it is that you can get men to die for the liberty of the world who will not make the little sacrifice that is needed to free themselves from their own individual bondage. Anything you believe you have to do or become before you can be free is a denial and distraction from the truth that you are already free. When you get in debt you become a slave. When you learn to be alone and not feel lonely, you learn to be free. The best way to keep a prisoner from escaping is to make sure he never knows he's in prison.
