A library is the delivery room for the birth of ideas, a place where history comes to life. We owe to the Middle Ages the two worst inventions of humanity - romantic love and gunpowder. Knowledge of the past and of the places of the earth is the ornament and food of the mind of man. Every year during their High Holy Days, the Jewish community reminds us all of our need for repentance and forgiveness. I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. A country can be judged by the quality of its proverbs. A people without history is like the wind on the buffalo grass. We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us. If one could only teach the English how to talk, and the Irish how to listen, society here would be quite civilized.
