A politician needs the ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year. And to have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn't happen. It is hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong. Winning needs no explanation, losing has no alibi. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. An excuse is worse and more terrible than a lie, for an excuse is a lie guarded.
